In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
