Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
